Within the capitalist growth economy, we're best described as a mission driven startup. But in reality, we're just a family business trying to earn a right livelihood - to make a living without harming others. We're striving to find a balance between autonomy and interdependence, to prioritise regenerative practices over economic efficiency, and to honour the First Nations culture that has lived with this Sea Country forever. Fundamentally, we believe in limits - of the natural world and resources, of how many hours make up a sane working week, and of how much it's reasonable to consume.

Moonrise Seaweed Co. is a family owned and operated business, established by the Darkson family in 2019 on Kaurna Yerta in South Australia.

 

Brad Darkson is an artist, kayak guide, mechanic, fisherman and proud First Nations man with family ties to Narungga, Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri Nations.

Dr Chloe Darkson is a marine biologist, oysterwoman, ocean educator, and a first generation Australian with family ties to the Netherlands, Greece and Scotland.

We established Moonrise Seaweed Co. with the intent to join our international neighbours on the long road to rehabilitating our oceans through the cultivation of native seaweed species.

We sustainably wild harvest Golden Kelp (Ecklonia radiata) by hand from the freshest South Australian waters, creating healthy cooking and ethical self-care products. Our growing range has been carefully crafted using the highest quality ingredients, sourced locally.

 

Farmed seaweed is the future of sustainable food production for a growing population. We've been developing a design for seaweed cultivation with the help of the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), and over the past few years we have made good progress with our dream of farming boutique indigenous South Australian seaweed species for the high end food market. It's a slow process, with the Australian seaweed industry only in its infancy, but we're persisting and hope to start experimenting with cultivation in the first half of 2022.
